What is a Ropes/Challenge Course?

A Ropes/Challenge Course is a series of team-building initiatives, consisting of low and high elements. Low elements take place on the ground and require "teams" to work together to achieve a common goal. That which appears simple can become quite challenging. High element activities that are more than 15 feet to 50 feet off the ground require participants to wear special harnesses, helmets, and attach to strong climbing "belay" ropes. Encouragement and support are often welcomed from participants watching from the ground.

Why are Ropes/Challenge Courses so Effective?

Team building, creative problem solving, conflict resolution skills, effective communication and trust are developed as participants go through these fun yet educational courses. "Learning while doing" is the key to experiential education. Studies have shown the success of impacting the Seven Domains of Human Functioning. The seven domains are Cognitive, Behavioral, Emotional, Social Interaction, Psychological, Physical, and Spiritual. These types of educational experiences impact all seven domains at the same time.

What does"Challenge by Choice mean?

"Challenge by Choice" is said often on our course and is always in effect. These 3 words empower participants in deciding what they should and should not do. Participants should factor in their physical and emotional abilities and take responsibility for their actions and choices.

Is this dangerous?

There is a risk associated with this type of activity. But that is why you are attracted to it in the first place. The risk according to a 15-year safety study performed by Project Adventure shows the following:

  • Accident Rate per Million Hours for Ropes Courses - 3.67
  • Accident Rate per Million Hours for Physical Education Class in School - 9.60
  • Accident Rate per Million Hours for Automobile Driving - 60.00

Analysis of the injuries point to soft-tissue injuries such as pulled muscles or sprains. At a Team Synergy, Inc. program we work very hard to minimize the risk.
